Description
Following the secession from the Union in 1861, the federal mint was taken over by the Government of Louisiana. Jefferson Davis authorized production of a Confederate Half Dollar by taking ordinary half dollars & removing their reverse motif. Only four specimens were struck. Restrikes were made by J.W. Scott, who somehow got hold of the original reverse die & struck 500 coins for sale to souvenir hunters using his own front, consisting of wording without portrait or design.
