Description

As the European powers competed to gain economic advantage through the exploitation of overseas colonies, it became apparent that use of specific trade coinage would serve a second purpose by advertising the existence of the home nation. This coin was made to compete with the Spanish Piece of Eight which was the most predominate coin all over the world. Many of these coins found there way into the New World & the American Colonies. The obverse bears the shield of Holland with the inscription, “Insignia Hollandiae”. On the reverse is the shield of the city of Amsterdam supported by the Lions of Netherlands with the Inscription, “Amstelredamensis Et. Civitatis.
