Description

(Ducatoon of Silver Rider) 1716
On Sept. 3, 1609 Henry Hudson, an English Explorer on behalf of the United East India Co. entered the area now known as New York in an attempt to find a NW passage to the Indies. He searched every coastal inlet & on the 12th he took his ship, the Halve Maen (Half Moon) up the river as far as Albany & claimed the land for his employer. This coin was minted in Holland to compete with the Spanish Piece of 8 as a trade dollar in the American Colonies. They were brought over by the Dutch who settled in New Amsterdam, NY in the 17th Century & spread outward as Dutch trade with the other colonies increased. It became known as the “Silver Rider” in the colonies & it was the most predominant coin of the Dutch East Indies during the 18th Century.
