Description
Spanish coins were popular in the American Colonies, because of the shortage of coins. So the colonists welcomed the Spanish coins because silver was so scarce. The colonies in order to keep the money flowing would cut the Spanish Bust Peso in half to give change. Thus, the name 4-bits. The colonists would also melt down the silver to make there own coins or other miscellaneous items.
