Description

This coin is from Bohemia, a part of the Holy Roman Empire, which is now the Czech Republic, where Count Stephen Schlik discovered huge silver deposits at St. Joachim’s Valley.  (St. Joachim was the father of the Virgin Mary).  The Count received a charter to mint coins of Silver from these mines in 1519 & they were called thalers for short (Thal means “Valley” in German).  They became very popular & was used throughout Europe and the American Colonies.  The U.S.Dollar originated from the thaler.
