Description
John Brown backed by money received by abolitionists in Canada & New England lead a raiding party of 16 white men & 5 Blacks in an attack on the Federal Arsenal at Harper’s Ferry,Va. His motive was to set up a republic of fugitive & freed slaves in the Appalachians, & then declare war on the slave States of the South. Brown held out for several days until the U.S. Marines, commanded by Col. Robert E. Lee came & cornered Brown & his men, after a shoot-out, by nightfall, Brown, wounded & 10 of his men dead, he was taken prisoner. Brown refusing to plead insanity as a defense for his actions went to trial & was found guilty of treason, criminal conspiracy, murder, & was sentenced to hang. He was hung on Dec. 2.
