Description
William & Mary accepted the English crown in 1688. They were proclaimed joint rulers of Great Britain until Mary’s death in 1694. William continued ruling until his death in 1702. King William’s War from 1689- 1697 was the 1st in a series of colonial conflicts between France & England for supremacy in North America. The major goal, other than prestige, was the control of the fur trade. Conflict was already smouldering on the N.E. frontier at the time of the English declaration of war against France in May of 1689. The French were angered over the plundering of St. Castine’s Trading House, so they incited the Abernaki Indians of Maine to destroy the rival English post of Pemaquid, & also to attack frontier settlements.
